A Debt, An Auction, and a Mercy No One Expected

In a small distant village lived a man named Salem, burdened by heavy debts. His crops had failed, his animals were gone, and he had nothing left except his only daughter, Laila. She was the light of his life and the reason he kept going despite everything.

One stormy day, the creditors knocked hard on his door. They threatened him with prison and taking his house. Salem sat silently, lost in despair, while Laila placed her hand gently on his shoulder and whispered, “Don’t worry, father… something good will happen.”

But Salem saw only one cruel solution.

The next morning, news spread through the marketplace: a man would offer his daughter in an auction to whoever paid the highest price to settle his debts. People gathered in shock. Some were angry, others curious. Laila stood quietly in simple clothes, her face pale but calm. Salem watched from afar, hiding his tears.

The bidding began.
“One thousand!”
“Two thousand!”
“Three thousand!”

Suddenly, a wealthy merchant dressed in dark clothes stepped forward. Known for his harshness, he raised his voice and said, “Ten thousand.”

Silence filled the market. No one dared to outbid him. The deal was made, and Salem’s debts were paid, but his heart felt broken.

The merchant took Laila to his large house. She expected cruelty, yet he remained distant and quiet. After days, she asked him, “Why did you buy me?”

He paused, then answered softly, “Years ago, my father was in debt. A rich man showed no mercy and took everything. My father died from sorrow. I thought I wanted revenge on the world.”

Laila looked at him with tears. “Did you get your revenge?”

He shook his head. “When I saw you, I realized I would only repeat the same injustice. I bought you to stop it.”

He handed her a document. “You are free. And this money is yours. Go back to your father.”

The next day, he returned her to the village. Salem hugged his daughter tightly, overwhelmed with relief. The merchant left quietly, known from that day as the man who bought a girl… only to give her freedom.
