FIFA Suspends One-Game Ban for USA Striker Folarin Balogun Ahead of Belgium Clash

United States forward Folarin Balogun will be available for selection in the World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium after FIFA suspended his one-match ban.

The 25-year-old was initially shown a straight red card for a challenge on Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic during the USA’s 2–0 victory in the Round of 32. Under normal regulations, the dismissal would have resulted in an automatic one-match suspension.

However, FIFA confirmed that the sanction has been suspended for a probationary period of one year, in line with Article 27 of its disciplinary code. The governing body stated that if Balogun commits a similar offence of equal or greater severity during that period, the suspension will be reinstated in addition to any new disciplinary action.

“In line with Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year,” FIFA said in a statement.

“If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement.”

The decision has drawn political attention in the United States. Former President Donald Trump praised FIFA for what he called “reversing a great injustice” in a post on Truth Social, thanking the governing body for its decision.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also commented on the incident, suggesting that the red card decision should have been reviewed and describing the punishment as unfair during a press briefing.

Balogun has been a key player for the United States during the tournament, scoring three goals so far under coach Mauricio Pochettino. He also opened the scoring against Bosnia before being sent off in the 64th minute following the challenge that led to his dismissal.

The incident occurred when Balogun attempted to shield a high ball but made contact with Muharemovic as he landed, prompting a VAR review and a subsequent red card from referee Raphael Claus.

While FIFA regulations typically enforce automatic suspensions for red cards, the governing body retains the discretion to adjust disciplinary measures. Similar precedents have occurred in past tournaments, including cases involving reduced or suspended sanctions for high-profile players.

Balogun’s availability is a major boost for the United States as they prepare for a crucial knockout-stage clash against Belgium.
